The Pyraminx: fast, clever, and surprisingly addictive
Every 15th of the month, we put a puzzle in the spotlight that deserves a little extra attention.
This month, we're looking at a classic that almost every cuber has held in their hands at some point: the Pyraminx.
While it's often seen as a "fast" or simple puzzle, there's surprisingly a lot of technique and strategy behind this tetrahedron.
🔺 What exactly is a Pyraminx?
The Pyraminx is a tetrahedron-shaped twisty puzzle with four triangular faces. Unlike a 3x3, this puzzle rotates around its corners and edges in a unique way.
Many people start by twisting the tips and think they've already solved a large part of the puzzle. But as you delve deeper into solving, you'll find there's a beautiful combination of intuition, algorithms, and quick moves involved.
The result: short, fast solves that are incredibly satisfying.
Many people only know the classic Pyraminx, but just like with cubes, there are also variants with multiple layers that make the puzzle even more challenging.
A well-known example is the Master Pyraminx. This version has an extra layer on each side, which means the puzzle contains more pieces and becomes much more complex to solve. The principle remains similar to the standard Pyraminx, but you get many more combinations and situations to analyze.
For puzzlers who have already mastered the regular Pyraminx, these types of variants are a fun next step.
Why the Pyraminx is so special
-
Extremely fast solves
With some practice, you can achieve solves in just a few seconds. -
Perfect for beginners and speedcubers
The basic concept is easy to grasp, but optimizing remains challenging. -
Unique turning movements
Due to its tetrahedral shape, turning feels completely different from a cube. -
Great flow during solving
Many cubers describe the Pyraminx as a puzzle with a delightful solve-flow. -
Official WCA event
The Pyraminx is a popular competition puzzle in the speedcubing world.
⚡How fast can a Pyraminx actually be solved?
The official world record for a single solve is held by Simon Kellum, who solved a Pyraminx in just 0.73 seconds during an official WCA competition.
This means that top cubers can solve the puzzle in less than a second, something that seems almost impossible for most people.
For most cubers, a good time is somewhere between 5 and 15 seconds, depending on experience and the quality of the puzzle. With practice, good look-ahead, and a smooth puzzle, you can make surprisingly fast progress!
Why we're highlighting the Pyraminx this month
For many puzzlers, the Pyraminx is a puzzle they encounter early in their cubing journey, but often only truly appreciate later. When you try a good quality Pyraminx, you notice how smooth and fast this puzzle can actually be.
That's why we're putting it in the spotlight this month.
